the detective work #
she’s been watching me.
“you’re on your phone a lot lately.”
“work stuff.”
“at 11pm on saturday?”
“algo monitoring.”
she didn’t buy it.
“you’re planning something.”
I tried to keep a straight face.
“maybe.”
she smiled. that smile she does when she knows she’s right.
the actual plan #
anniversary is december 13. six months married.
booked a cabin in big bear.
private hot tub. mountain views. fireplace.
three nights.
she’s been wanting to see snow. san diego doesn’t exactly deliver on that.
the afternoon #
went to the farmer’s market together.
she loves these things. I used to think they were boring.
now I just like watching her get excited about vegetables.
“look at these tomatoes!”
“they’re… tomatoes?”
“heirloom tomatoes. totally different.”
I bought them. she was happy.
evening #
cooked dinner together.
she made something with those fancy tomatoes. actually pretty good.
sat on the couch after. she was reading, I was pretending to look at my phone while actually researching big bear restaurants.
dr R this week #
therapy was interesting.
“you seem more settled than usual.”
“do I?”
“the anniversary planning. you’re excited about it.”
“yeah. I want it to be special.”
“why?”
“because she deserves it. she puts up with a lot. the trading hours, my mood swings, the days I’m locked in on the screens.”
“and?”
“and I love her. I want her to know that.”
dr R nodded. “that’s growth. a year ago you would have called anniversary dinners ‘obligations.’”
she’s right. I would have.
the sex #
later that night.
slow. romantic. not the usual quick kitchen counter stuff.
took my time with her. built her up until she was desperate for it.
when she finally came, she grabbed my back so hard she left marks.
I love when she does that.
tonight #
11:48pm. she’s asleep.
saturday with my wife. farmer’s market, heirloom tomatoes, dr R session, romantic sex.
one month until big bear.
hope she doesn’t figure it out before then.
