her: “wait you actually colocated in chicago too?”
me: “yeah, need low latency for futures execution”
her: “that’s so fucking cool”
grabbed her phone and took photos of the rack.
not joking. she was genuinely excited about servers.
networking:
showed her ubiquiti 10Gbe network.
her: “why 10 gig?”
me: “data feeds are bandwidth heavy. market data from 3 exchanges plus crypto”
her: “makes sense. latency?”
me: “sub-millisecond to colo, ~35ms to chicago”
she asked TECHNICAL questions. not “oh cool computers.”
monitoring dashboards:
pulled up grafana on 34" monitor.
her: “holy shit you built all this?”
me: “yeah. tracks every trade, latency, system health, market data gaps”
her: “this is production level infrastructure. i’m impressed”
we cooked dinner #
made pasta together.
she’s actually good cook (unlike me).
talked about her streamlit dashboard while cooking.
showed me on her laptop. clean code, good data viz.
me: “you’re legit good at python”
her: “took me a year to get comfortable with pandas”
me: “same. still google shit constantly”
after dinner #
watched sunset from balcony.
talked about parents dying (she asked, i answered honestly).
her: “that’s fucking awful. i’m sorry”
me: “it’s weird. some days i’m fine, some days i cry. mostly fine now.”
her: “makes sense. grief isn’t linear”
didn’t try to fix me. just listened. huge green flag.

me: “want to stay over?”
her: “not tonight. want to but taking it slow”
me: “respect that”
her: “next time though”
