small fights - learning to share space without losing myself

been living together 18 days.

first real fight happened.

learning cohabitation isn’t autopilot.

the fight (friday night)
#

context: finished trading. account up. good week.

came out to living room.

her stuff everywhere.

laptop on couch. charger across floor. coffee mug on my side table. workout clothes on chair. shoes by door (not in closet).

me (annoyed): “can you clean up your stuff?”

A.: “i will later. just finished working.”

me: “it’s been there since this morning.”

A.: “so? we live here together. it’s not a museum.”

me: “but it’s everywhere. you said you’d clean up by end of day.”

A.: “it’s 6pm. day’s not over.”

me: “it’s just… everywhere. all the time.”

A.: “you’re being obsessive. it’s a laptop and a mug.”

me: “and clothes. and shoes. and yesterday’s dishes still in sink.”

A.: “i’ll do the dishes after dinner. why does everything need to be perfect all the time?”

me: “it’s not about perfect. it’s about shared space.”

A.: “shared means both of us. not just your way.”

walked away.

sat at my desk.

pissed.

processing (30 minutes alone)
#

my thought loop:

  • this is why i don’t do relationships
  • can’t handle someone else’s mess in my space
  • maybe living together was mistake
  • she doesn’t respect my need for order
  • probably won’t work long-term

then:

  • wait. she cleans up. just not on my timeline.
  • her mess isn’t malicious. just different organization style.
  • i’m being controlling.
  • this is small shit.

conflict:

part of me wants to end it over coffee mug placement.

part of me knows that’s avoidant bullshit.

therapy voice in my head
#

dr. r’s words from last session:

“you’ll want to run when small conflicts happen. that’s your pattern. don’t. stay. work through it.”

fuck.

she’s right.

coming back (her perspective)
#

A. (came to my desk 30 min later): “you okay?”

me: “yeah. just annoyed.”

A.: “i get it. i’m messy. you’re not. we’re different.”

me: “it’s not… i know i’m being controlling.”

A.: “little bit. but i also could be better about cleaning up faster.”

me: “i don’t want to be the guy who freaks out over coffee mugs.”

A.: “you’re not freaking out. you’re communicating. badly. but communicating.”

me: “i almost ran.”

A.: “i know. i could see it. you get quiet and withdrawn.”

me: “old pattern. when things feel out of control, i leave.”

A.: “you didn’t leave. you stayed. that’s growth.”

me: “dr. r would say the same thing.”

A.: “dr. r is smart. and hot.”

me: “why do you always bring that up?”

A.: “because it’s true and it’s funny watching you try not to admit you notice.”

tension broke.

the compromise
#

her: clean up living room/kitchen by 8pm daily.

me: accept that her desk area (her corner) can be messy as she wants.

both: communicate when annoyed BEFORE it builds to fight.

her: “also you need to admit when you’re being obsessive.”

me: “deal. but you need to admit when you’re being lazy.”

A.: “i’m not lazy. i’m creatively chaotic.”

me: “that’s just rebranded lazy.”

A.: “fuck you.”

me: “later maybe.”

A.: “definitely later.”

what i’m learning
#

living together means compromise.

can’t have everything my way.

her mess isn’t attack on me.

my organization isn’t attack on her.

we’re different people sharing space.

small fights ≠ relationship ending.

old me: coffee mug fight = evidence relationship failing = time to exit.

current me: coffee mug fight = normal cohabitation friction = work through it.

staying is harder than running.

running is reflex.

staying requires choice.

chose to stay.

later that night
#

made up.

had fantastic sex.

bondage, toys, the works.

best part: communication during.

tell each other exactly what we want.

no shame. total trust.

post-sex:

A.: “we should fight more often if this is the makeup.”

me: “let’s just skip to this part next time.”

A.: “deal.”

therapy yesterday (friday before fight)
#

dr. r: “how’s cohabitation?”

me: “good. few annoyances but managing.”

dr. r: “when’s the first real fight?”

me: “haven’t had one yet.”

dr. r: “you will. probably soon. little things build up.”

me: “what do i do?”

dr. r: “stay. don’t run. communicate. work through it.”

me: “what if i want to run?”

dr. r: “you will want to run. that’s your avoidant pattern. recognize it. choose different.”

literally 12 hours later: fight happened.

stayed.

worked through it.

dr. r called it.

what A. said later
#

A. (in bed after sex): “you stayed.”

me: “yeah.”

A.: “i know that’s hard for you. confrontation. messiness. not having control.”

me: “everything in me wanted to shut down or leave.”

A.: “but you didn’t. you came back. you talked.”

me: “you make it easier. you don’t make fights bigger than they are.”

A.: “because they’re not. we argued about a coffee mug. that’s normal.”

me: “nothing in my relationships has been normal.”

A.: “maybe that’s the point. this is what normal looks like. small fights. compromises. staying.”

reflection
#

18 days living together.

first real fight.

worked through it.

didn’t run.

had great sex after.

this is new territory.

old pattern: conflict → withdraw → create distance → exit.

new pattern: conflict → pause → communicate → resolve → reconnect.

growth.

3:40pm saturday. first real fight living together. fought about mess. wanted to run. stayed instead. talked through it. made up. learning compromise isn’t losing control. it’s sharing it.
